The Memorial Hospital Sleep Disorders Center provides the highest level of sleep medicine services in Colorado Springs. We are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

According to the Sleep Foundation, it’s estimated that more than 70 million people in this country suffer from a sleep disorder. Symptoms of a sleep disorder include daytime sleepiness or fatigue, falling asleep during the day at inappropriate times, un-refreshing sleep, waking up gasping for air, and snoring.

Oficialmente, hay 81 trastornos del sueño documentados, algunos de los más comunes incluyen:

La importancia del sueño

Sleep may often seem overrated, and even a waste of time, but in order to stay healthy everyone must make time for it. To stay healthy emotionally and physically, sleep is needed in certain amounts and on a daily basis. Sleep also helps the body rest after a long day, recover after an injury and/or illness and helps the body feel more energized. If people don’t make time to get their rest, their actions may result in consequences such as a higher risk for diabetes, obesity, depression and even heart conditions like heart disease.

At Memorial Sleep Disorders Center, we offer sleep studies and sleep consultations (we recommend you contact your insurance company to verify coverage to see a specialist)

Obtener ayuda para los problemas de sueño

For anyone suffering with sleep problems, there is always a way to seek help. Many people don’t understand that their sleep problems are linked and a result of different systems in the body. For example, patients suffering from narcolepsy have a neurological disorder, while those suffering from sleep apnea have a respiratory condition that needs attention.

Different sleep disorders will be treated by different specialists. For example, someone seeking treatment for their narcolepsy won’t be going to a specialist that mainly focuses on sleep apnea. Though there are all sorts of helpful physicians out there, there are also many helpful medical specialists. A person can go and seek treatment with the help of many different programs, rehabilitation centers and mental health centers. There are certain standards and certifications that physicians must meet in order to become certified for the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

Cada paciente debe tomarse el tiempo para discutir con su médico cualquier inquietud que pueda tener sobre el sueño.

Qué esperar si le programan un estudio del sueño

A sleep study requires an overnight stay in our clinic and is considered an outpatient visit by your insurance company. After checking in, you are taken to your private room equipped with a bed, private bathroom and cable television. Your technician explains the procedure and answers your questions while preparing you for the test. Electrodes are attached to collect the data. The wires are long enough for you to move around the room and turn over in bed. You may read or watch television until your normal bedtime. You are monitored throughout the night and you can page your technician if you need anything. Tests typically end around 5:30 to 6:30 a.m.

A final report is ready in 7 to 10 days. We fax a copy to your referring doctor. We encourage you to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to discuss the findings of the sleep study. If you need treatment, it is discussed at that time.

Those who don’t get adequate amounts of sleep will soon notice their emotional and mental health deteriorating. For example, they may not be as productive, and their daily routine may seem much more stressful. It is also said that those suffering from insomnia will have a greater risk of developing certain psychiatric problems. Recent studies have also shown that those who get an inadequate amount of sleep each night have a harder time with these tasks:

  • Learning new things
  • Mathematical problems
  • Memorization
  • Reasoning
