I am a primary care physician who devoted the first twenty years of my professional life serving the healthcare needs of soldiers and military families. As a board-certified physician in Family Medicine with a certificate of additional qualification in Sports Medicine, I now enjoy serving patients of all ages in my community to improve your health and wellness. I offer a full spectrum of primary care, ranging from infant to senior adult. I practice patient-centered care that brings to life a close professional understanding of each individual patient’s needs and desires. I value this partnership in health care as I strive to bring 5-star patient satisfaction and comfort to even the most challenging aspects of medicine.

A New York native, I earned my military commission at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY before attending medical school at the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. After graduating medical school in 1993, I began a rewarding military career that included formal Family Medicine Residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship training at DeWitt Army Community Hospital in Virginia. I completed a Faculty Development Fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill in 2007. Before retiring as a Colonel in 2014, I completed two combat tours and several executive medical leadership roles including the Chief Medical Officer at Evans Army Community Hospital, Fort Carson. I was fortunate to earn numerous military awards, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and two Combat Air Medals.

Educating patients is a big part of my mission as a physician. I present all available care options with attention to cost and outcome goals. I would sum up this perspective on teaching patients as “I believe if you’re educated about your health, you’ll take better care of yourself”. Wellness and preventive health measures are an essential aspect of my practice as I strive to promote healthy choices and lifestyles ahead of medication remedies. When patients do need medication, you have my commitment to ensure you understand the reason for the medication.

Medicine for Every Athlete
I look for every opportunity to infuse my 15 years of Sports Medicine experience into the many aspects of wellness and chronic disease management. I am a firm believer that exercise and fitness pursuits at all levels add depth and function to healthcare solutions. In addition to managing my own primary care panel, UCHealth has supported my practice in accepting Sports Medicine specialty referrals from my peers. I enjoy working with other physicians and medical providers in finding therapeutic and alternative medical solutions for a vast array of non-operative orthopedic conditions and sports performance concerns. I periodically volunteer my Sports Medicine services to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and lead UCHealth’s city-wide Concussion Care Program.

I completed my MBA at CU Denver in 2019. I cannot imagine a better place to live than Colorado where I can explore all the outdoor thrills of running, skiing and biking. I am married to Dr. Elizabeth Piantanida and we are blessed with three adult sons.
