Any time a patient needs anesthesia, it can be a stressful and scary experience–but I don’t think it has to be. I try to always remember that while surgeries and procedures ranging from minor to major are routine for our team, it isn’t routine for our patients and their families. Children and adults alike benefit when we take the time to answer their questions, explain what to expect, and we all work to demystify the sanctum of the operating room in advance. I believe in a comprehensive plan of preoperative preparation, carefully orchestrated intraoperative care, and postoperative pain management appropriate for each individual patient. Every day is an opportunity for us to turn major life events of our patients into a positive experience and improve their overall health.
