Dr. Hoyer joined UCHealth Hematology and Oncology in Colorado Springs in 2008 and currently serves as the medical director of oncology. He also has moderated Memorial’s Gastrointestinal Cancer Tumor Board for several years. He specializes in gastrointestinal cancers and lung cancer.

Dr. Hoyer is board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in hematology and oncology at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.

Dr. Hoyer is dedicated to patient-centered care and he strongly believes in the value of comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer treatment. Dr. Hoyer chose to join UCHealth’s program because of its team approach to cancer treatment, an approach in which highly trained cancer specialists work together to meet the individual needs of each patient. According to Dr. Hoyer, the partnership with other UCHealth locations and the University of Colorado Cancer Center gives patients access to more treatment options and clinical trials than ever before.

In his free time, Dr. Hoyer enjoys spending time with his family, skiing and biking.

Dr. Robert Hoyer’s goal is to bring the highest level of oncology care to the community of Colorado Springs and surrounding regions. “We do this by providing quick and easy access to patient appointments, team-based models of care in which providers discuss patients throughout their diagnosis and treatment, and by providing access to the most advanced clinical trials,” he said. “Every medical provider and staff member treats patients as one of their family members. In this model, we have found that we are to streamline the care of patients with complex diagnoses – often-time shaving weeks off the time required to initiate cancer therapy.” Memorial also implemented a process to allow patients to see a medical oncologist within 48 hours and opened a new office and infusion center at Memorial Hospital North. More changes are on the horizon: Hoyer is also excited about what he calls “a new era” in the care of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies, such as pancreatic cancer and esophageal cancer. “We will begin a weekly multidisciplinary gastrointestinal oncology clinic at Memorial in September. Patients will be seen by a surgeon, gastroenterologist, radiation oncologist and medical oncologist simultaneously, with real-time care planning,” he said. “I’m extremely excited to be a part of the UCHealth Oncology program and help bring continued advances in cancer care delivery to the Colorado Springs community.”
