One of the main attributes that drew me to neurology was the necessity of spending time talking with and examining our patients to reach a proper diagnosis. We have made incredible breakthroughs in technology, but I found that sitting down to converse with and examine patients to reach a diagnosis that cannot be made with a simple test was most rewarding. I also recognize that medicine is a team sport, and partnering with the healthcare team is critical to providing our patients with the best care possible. Additionally, early in my training I realized that while we are traditionally trained to focus on the medical illness, other aspects of a patient’s life (social, emotional, financial, etc.) can be just as essential to proper diagnosis and treatment; to not acknowledge this often means missing a key aspect of their health and well-being. In a specialty in which many of our diagnoses can be scary and disabling, I strive to take the time to evaluate and get to know my patients as a whole person as I feel this is essential in helping me to know how to best partner with them in their care. Personally, that’s why I wanted to become a doctor in the first place.
I am originally from North Carolina, which usually becomes apparent after talking for awhile as my accent slips out eventually. I live with my husband and our four furbabies – two dogs and two cats. We love white water rafting, traveling, hiking and reading. In my spare time I also enjoy crochet and other types of crafting.
